More than fresh breath

March 7, 2011

I have a confession.  I love math.  I love numbers.  I love spreadsheets.  BUT,  I hated managing our budget.  It was time consuming.  It was monotonous.  It was tedious.  It was BORING.

Now, if I love math and hated budgeting, I can see why so many people struggle to develop and maintain a budget.  But my struggles ended in 2008 when I was introduced to the web-based software below.  What used to take me approx 4-5 hours a month, has been reduced to about an hour.  Where I used to have to check Microsoft Money (or Quicken), my bank website, my credit card website, my investment website…I now go to one place and see an up-to-date snapshot of our financial health.  Allocating our expenses to the appropriate budget line-item used to take hours, now it takes minutes.  And here’s the best part – IT’S FREE!!!

I know mint.com is not the only web-based software with this functionality, but it’s the one I know, and I couldn’t be more pleased.  (Plus, this is my blog – so I get to recommend whatever I want.)  Seriously, I don’t care what tool you use, but find one that will encourage you to develop and maintain your budget, and will help you create margin without wasting precious time.  Watch this short video below and be amazed.  It just takes a few minutes to sign up, and if you’ll allocate one night this week, you could revolutionize your approach to budgeting and start getting your financial house in order.
